Pastor’s Corner: Advent Letter, 2014

Pastor’s Corner: Advent Letter, 2014

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Advent is a Christian season during which we prepare ourselves spiritually to celebrate the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. This is also a time of the year when we are able to see the stark contrast between our spiritual values and the materialistic temptations of our culture. This year, it is projected that Americans will spend more than $600 billion dollars during the Christmas season, and most of that money is spent on gifts!

In December, I’ll be offering a series of workshops called “A Natural Christmas,” and I’ll be teaching some of the ways we can give gifts that we make ourselves, are inexpensive and are also kind to our environment. Homemade gifts and creative gifts of our time and presence are ways that we can remember that the most important gift we have to give during this holiday season is the gift of love. As Christians, we celebrate the love we have received from Jesus, and we want to share that love with others.

As we light our Advent candles each week, we will introduce a part of the Christmas story that we will celebrate: blessing, miracles, hope, and love. Our service on December 14 will be one of Baptismal Renewal and Healing, and we will celebrate with carols and harp on December 21. We will have a mid-week service of candlelight, Holy Communion, music and prayer on December 16. Each of these services will prepare us for the celebration of Christ’s birth, and we will be spiritually renewed and reborn to face the challenges of the New Year.

As we prepare our hearts for Christmas this year, let us remember that as Christians we are people of hope in whom others may see the light of Christ.

In Christ’s love,

Pastor Sarah
